WHAT IS THE
ASSOCIATION OF GARDENS TRUSTS?
The Association of Gardens Trusts is a national charity to help young and old value the nation's unique heritage of parks, gardens and landscapes.
The AGT encourages individual county gardens trusts to research their historic parks and gardens in order to maintain a record;
- as a 'stock take'
- to recognise landscapes and gardens that are 'forgotten
treasures'
- to indicate historic parks and gardens endangered
by neglect or inappropriate development
- to identify where further research is required
- to inform
- proposals for change and development,
- restoration and conservation
- ongoing management
- to understand
- the development of the landscape
- the impact of social and cultural influences
- to analyse
- the features, periods, styles, types, designers
of the historic landscape
- The knowledge gained of historic parks and gardens
will:
- inform
the understanding and presentation of the landscape
- promote
public interest, appreciation and participation in specific sites
- encourage
its use as a resource for education, recreation and tourism
- identify
local characteristics and features
- help inform
national and local government bodies involved in the management, restoration
and protection of historic parks and gardens
- The information gained will be stored:
- with the local County Gardens Trust
or the Association of Gardens Trusts
- with the appropriate Record Office
- on the appropriate Sites and Monuments Record
- on the UK Parks & Gardens database and directory of historic parks and gardens at
York University
