Wednesday 2nd June to Monday 7th June 2010. Unknown Umbria.
Wednesday 2nd June. Arrive at Perugia airport. Villa Fidelio, Spello. Lunch Trevi, explore the town and a notable museum before going on to Spoleto, staying at the 3* Hotel Aurora.
Thursday 3rd June. Tour of Spoleto. After lunch we go to Montefalco , known as the Balcony of Umbria. Gozzoli frescoes and mummies followed by a wine tasting.
Friday 4th June. The abandoned Roman town of Carsulae in the morning and Bevagna, itself a Roman town we can visit the baths as well as see the “medieval” workshops, an 18th century theatre and the little towns churches and palazzi.
Saturday 5th June. The Piano Grande, called the largest wild flower meadow in Europe, it is in fact a collapsed volcanic crater measuring 12 by 6 miles, it is also very high, Castelluccio is 1452 metres above sea level, so predicting the summer flowers is hazardous! Norcia, birth place of Saint Benedict, is a small town of considerable interest and dedicated to chocolate and every possible piece of pork.
Sunday 6th June, Vallo di Nera, to see their local cheese fair (and taste them!) It is a picturesque village high above the River Nera, with good churches and much that is interesting. Cascata del Marmore at 165 metres one of Europe’s most spectacular waterfalls and originally made by the Romans when they improved the flow of the River Velino, to drain the plain around Rieti, the Velino now drops into the Nera, except when the flow is diverted into the turbines to generate electricity (more careful timing needed!).
Monday 7th June. Visit Perugia’s Art Gallery, then return to Perugia for flight home.
