Recording a copper beech at Wimpole

The AGT is pleased to become a partner with the

Ancient Tree Hunt (ATH)

to find and map all the fat, old trees across the UK

Project Description

The five year project is spearheaded by the Woodland Trust in partnership with the Ancient Tree Forum and the Tree Register of the British Isles, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, also Scottish Natural Heritage and Wales Council for Voluntary Action.  They are partnered with the Tree Register (David Alderman) with 6000 records brought over from them. Their remit is to find 100,000 trees in three years. They already have 108 trained verifiers and 11,000 records.

Each recorded tree will have its own “blog”.

"A gallery of information per tree" – whether ancient, veteran or notable, will include the details of the person recording the tree - from very simple “hugs size”  - to biodiversity, physical description, photos, paintings, drawings and poems. Several different people might record the same tree in different ways, and in all its aspects.

Please note that privacy will be protected. Any sensitive details will be hidden if on private land. (Red tree for private, green tree for public on the ATH interactive map) Trained verifiers will eventually get round to checking that logged details are accurate.

What AGT partnership means for County Gardens Trust researchers?

There is an obvious correlation with our recording work, in gardens, parkland landscapes and public parks. Our volunteer CGT researchers currently surveying out in the field will be on the look-out to supply useful data regarding important trees to the project.
