Priestlands School Secret Weapon

Royal Approval

Pigs and piglets are the secret weapon of the Eco Warriors of Priestlands School, Lymington.  This lively lot, under the inspired guidance of their Science Teacher and Sustainable Schools Co-ordinator, Kit Rogers, are restoring the run down walled garden on their school site, with support from the Hampshire Gardens Trust and such kitchen garden luminaries as Susan Campbell.

The Eco Warriors are bent on growing and eating local produce to reduce their carbon footprint - and the pigs are helping, not least by imrpoving the fertility of the soil. The Warriors take their pigs seriously and have had butchery lessons.  The snags are eaten in the school canteen and another kitchen in Gloucestershire, Highgrove no less, has bought some - with enquiries about breeds and recipes!   His Royal Highness may not have the advantage of running his pigs on the New Forest but he is a dab hand at sausages so this is praise indeed.   Congratulations to the Eco Warriors, the Year 11 Catering boys who actually make the bangers, to Kit and his supportive Head, Chris Wilsher.  Kit will be speaking about this splendid and sustainable project at the AGM of the Hampshire Gardens Trust at Bramshill on Saturday, 19th April.  Let HGT know if you would like to attend.
